A few initial thoughts on the Sabbath and the Lord's Day

My friend Charlene has interesting questions about work and Sundays:  she wants to please the Lord in this, and so do we.  We are busy getting ready for a few days away, so these are first notes on the Lord's Day as summarised from one of  John Piper's sermons.

  1. The big question for the Sabbath is whether or not in the New Testament there is a commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy in the same way it was commanded in the Old Testament.
  2. It was a capital offense in the Old Testament. You could be killed for carrying sticks on the Sabbath day.
  3. The Christian Sabbath is Sunday, the Lord's day, the resurrection day of Jesus.
  4. Now the question then becomes, What is God's will for the resurrection day, for Sunday, as it is revealed in the New Testament?
  5. People that give no thought to the Lord's day and don't do anything to make it special are not going to plan their "Lord's Day" with God's values in mind.
  6. The principle in the New Testament is that God ordains that one day in seven be restful.
